Three Ways To End Your Sentences And Be More Concise

(March 13, 2023 Newsletter)

Want to speak more concisely? Focus on ending your sentences.

One of the reasons people meander is because they don’t know how to end their sentences. Here are three strategies you can start using today:

❗Come back to your main point.

Restate your opening sentence or the main point you were trying to make.

Examples:

  • Like I said, if you talk to her, it will only make it worse.

  • In short, I think it’s a great idea.

  • To summarize, my preference is to try {A} and {B} next, not {C}.

❓ Ask a question.

If you’re in a conversation or a meeting, pass the ball to someone else.

Examples:

  • I’m going to stop there. What do you think?

  • I’ll pause. What are your thoughts?

  • I’ve said a lot. How is this landing for you?

  • Let me stop for a second. What’s resonating with you?

  • I value your opinion. What am I missing?

  • I’m sure you have thoughts too. What’s your take?

🔴 If you’ve lost your own train of thought, just stop.

Examples:

  • That’s my opinion/recommendation.

  • That’s all I have to say about that.

  • That’s it for me on this, for now.

Which of these strategies are you going to try this week?

Praise vs encouragement

Be careful how much emotional junk food you’re feeding your team. Praising with empty phrases like “great job” can lead to sugar crashes, while encouragement - recognizing the person’s values, strengths, or resources - will sustain their energy levels for longer.
